Talking about Charlotte.

Kinja'd!!!

Now I am not going to wade into the nust and bolts of what happened in Charlotte, but rather a development in conservative circles overnight.

Conservative columnist and tenured U of Tennessee law professor Glen Reynolds tweeted an image of civillian cars on the interstates in Charlotte being surrounded by rioters (at this point it was no longer a peaceful protest) with text that stated “RUN THEM DOWN”. Needless to say, twitter immediately suspended his account and leftists are now screaming for him to lose his jobs at USA Today and at UT.

Now, I admit the tweet can have inferred meaning far beyond the intended meaning, and it clearly was not articulated appropriately; however we have seen more than a few posts and stories on Jalopnik regarding mobs surrounding vehicles and the possible results.

Should Instapundant (aka Glen Reynolds) be fired for advocating keeping oneself safe when surrounded by a mob?

The only solution is autonomous protestors.

I feel like this is a thing that would exist in Futurama. Bender would somehow get involved and hijinks would ensue.

What other meaning is there to infer from that tweet? To take the protesters and “run them down” to a nearby restaurant for food and drink? To “run them down” in a foot race for sport?

while I believe the pejorative “SJW” is used far too frequently and inappropriately, I think the term is suitable for people like the above. it’s not being an “SJW” to tell someone “hey, saying stuff like that is not cool.” However, trying to harass someone into silence and attempting to end his career IS.

You’re clearly not reading between the lines. By “RUN THEM DOWN” he means “THROW IT ON THE GROUND” because he’s not a part of the system.

A tenured professor publicly promoted violence. Why shouldn’t he face ramifications for it?

We’ve got to ban manual protesters.

I think the issue is that “RUN THEM DOWN” is kind of vague in intent. Did he mean run them down in terms of safety? Run them down due to disagreement and the fact they’re in your way? I would hope he meant in the safe way, but if that’s the case, he should have been more clear, especially since he had plenty of characters left to use (15 out of 144 used).

Now, should he be fired? Once again, that comes back to the intent behind what he said, which only he really knows. I don’t think he should be fired, but he should probably be warned about the repercussions of his actions on social media and how they reflect on his university, and he should probably be fired if it were to happen again.

Part of freedom of speech is dealing with the consequences of what you say or express. If it’s okay for him to encourage running down rioters, it’s okay for people who were upset by that to encourage the loss of his job

i’m starting to get the impression that these people are just using this as an excuse to fuck stuff up. It just has a different feel than other times this has happened.

At the very least the school should publicly denounce the remark and state his views do not represent their own.

* the most epic facepalm of my fucking life!!!! *

Pathetic morons!

Now, as far as the protesters, they are doing everything WRONG!!!!

Everyone sucks!

I’m not saying he shouldn’t, but it’s up to his employers to determine those ramifications according to their policies. not the harassment of a shrieking mob.

And as a driver, if you have passengers, then their well being is in your hands. You need to use whatever means necessary to get them to safety, regardless of the ramifications to those outside the vehicle.

I think he should be given a social media & work training course that most other adults that have jobs at larger companies need to take. If he has already been trained on his employer’s stance on acceptable social media practices, and their policies on firing people for social media, then I’m indifferent if he gets sacked or not.

Regarding mowing down protestors with your vehicle for blocking the road, it depends. Are they surrounding your vehicle and beating on it in a violent and threatening manor? Fuck ‘em, unleash your inner Range Rover and protect yourself and the other occupants of your vehicle. Are they just standing there waving signs and chanting? If so, then no, do not mow them down.
